Over the last 1000 years the Courtney / Courtenay family spread from France into England and Ireland, and in the last 400 years the family has settled in the Americas, South Africa and Australia. And during that timeframe the name has absorbed many other surnames, such as Callan, Cournane and McCourt in Ireland, and Calf, Coughtrey in England.

Recently with the advent of reasonably priced DNA testing genealogists now have a wondrous tool at their disposal to go along with documented family histories. Although many view this as a threat to their long held beliefs of who and where their family belong, I take the opposite approach and want to know the truth about my forebears. Brickwalls are crumbling with affordable DNA testing and the future is very bright with each new advance in genetic genealogy.

Presently there are no Courtney lines proven to be descendants from the Courtenays of France or the Courtenays of Powderham in Devon, England using DNA testing.  Research becomes easier when you let go of the mythology of your name or place and just see where the science leads.

Included with this study will be articles, bible records, census returns, DNA studies,  immigration records, land record, and links to other websites and sources.

If anyone has information to share, questions or comments you can always reach me at stancourtney@hotmail.com.

The Genealogy Triangle

There is a revolution going on within researching one’s family tree. Fifteen years ago genealogists used oral history and written records to compile their family histories. Then in the early 2000’s genetic genealogy came on the scene. Things immediately got more difficult to understand with new words like haplogroup, STR’s, SNP’s, and different types of DNA testing, i.e. YDNA, mtDNA and autosomal.

Triangle

So if you are a member or you are wanting to join the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project what is the progression of testing for your direct male line, YDNA?

A. Traditional genealogy never ends. The admins of the project are here to help you with your genealogy but I learned it is a mistake to make any bold statements until after initial DNA testing.

B. STR testing. Many people start with 12 marker tests, it is the cheapest test and you can always upgrade later using your provided sample. However it is advisable to upgrade to 67 markers as at that level your non-relatives, that were prevalent at 12 and 37 marker levels have been filtered out. 67 marker testing is considered the “gold standard” for STR testing.

C. SNP testing. With your initial 12 marker test Family Tree DNA will give you a predicted haplogroup usually, R1a, R1b or I haplogroups. Predicted haplogroups in the charts are colored red, while tested haplogroups are colored green. Over the last fifteen years new SNPs have been discovered bringing the age of the SNPs closer and closer to the present times. With the introduction of NextGen testing there has been a literal SNP tsunami of SNPs. The Big Y was first released on the 9th of Nov 2013 and although expensive has been received with great enthusiasm by thousands who have welcomed the new technology. The Big Y looks for all SNPs, known and unknown and usually gives the tester a large group of SNPs that are unique to them. So for the first time SNPs are coming down to written genealogy. STR values can be quite variable and mutate back and forth wile SNPs are a one time mutation.

There are 3 steps in SNP testing:

1 – individual SNPs
2 – SNP packs can have over 100 individual SNP’s
3 – The Big Y tests for thousand of known and unknown SNPs

Please ask an admin for advice on which SNP to order.

So modern genealogy is a tripartite endeavor. We can think of modern genealogy as forming a three sided triangle: traditional genealogy – STR testing – SNP testing.

How is your triangle, are you missing one leg or perhaps even two?

What now? Part # 3 – YDNA Test Relatives

What now? Part # 3 – YDNA test relatives

The only way a line of descent can be proven is to YDNA test additional male relatives. The best technique is to test descendants from each son of the earliest known ancestor. Having only one male tested on a particular lineage leaves us wondering if the line is correct or not.

Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project – Y-DNA Classic Chart

Currently the Groups within the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project that have tested several descent lines from a common ancestor include:

Group 04 – Thomas Courtney b 1728 Ireland d 1811 Monongalia Co., WV

Group 05 – unknown Courtney b abt 1600 Ireland

Group 08 – John James Courtney 1688-1756 VA

Group 11 – Caswell Courtney b 1812 KY d 1894 Chariton County, MO

Group 15 – Robert Courtney 1695-1751 NC

Group 17 – Gordon Ellsworth Courtney b 1863 Upshur County, WV

Group 18 – Edward Courtney b 1836-1878 IL

Group 19 – Frederick Courtney b 1815 VA d 1877 LA

Group 24 – unknown Courtney b abt 1780 VA

What now? Part # 2 – Update your YDNA results.

The number one thing anyone who has YDNA tested is to upgrade those tests. A 12 marker STR test is valuable to find out your predicted major haplogroup, ie. I, J, R1a or R1b haplogroups.  You should also be able to exclude yourself from certain groups of Courtneys. However most people eventually upgrade to 37 or 67 markers. 67 marker is considered the “Gold Standard” for STR testing. If you match someone at 67 markers you are almost guaranteed of being related to that person, albeit distantly.

SNP testing has become much more important the last couple of years. If you match someone with STR you are not 100% guaranteed of being related.   STR’s are fluid, change readily and can change back and forth.  SNP’s however are a one-time mutation, once mutated they remain there forever.  For finding relatives back in the 500-1000 year time frame SNP’s are of utmost valuable.

So for upgrade testing first one should upgrade their STR testing to at least 67 markers and then purse SNP testing. As always the Group Admins of each group should  be consulted on the best direction to go. SNP’s are sold as individual SNPs, SNP packs (sometimes over a hundred SNPs in a bundle) and then the Big Y.

The Big Y is the most important new test. Considered NextGen (next generation) the Big Y unlike individual SNPs or SNP packs, looks for all SNPs, known and unknown. Although expensive the Big Y will ultimately yield the most information. Many groups join together to share the cost and once the results come in they can order a single SNP to verify their placement.

What now? Part # 1 – Complete genealogy of family.

Many members after DNA testing seem to not know their next move.  My first response is:

Assemble as complete a genealogy as possible from your earliest Courtney ancestor.  Many people tend to concentrate on their own lineage but collecting and documenting the names of all descendants from your common ancestor will ultimately help complete a better history of the family.

There are literally thousands of genealogies of the Courtney surname found at Ancestry.com.  If you are not a subscriber, many libraries do subscribe and you can access Ancestry.com there. Posting your own family tree publicly will go a long ways to bringing in new information from distant relatives.

Familysearch.org is also a wonderful resource.  They have most of the U.S. Census from 1790-1940.  They have hundreds of other source materials and use of the website is free.

I’ve assembled a few links that are should help. They can be found here:

Are you wanting to have your Courtney DNA tested for free?

Are you wanting to have your Courtney DNA tested for free?

Many Courtney genealogy researchers are using DNA to help them find more ancestors. Sometimes they run into brick walls and one way they solve this is with DNA. And many of these people offer to sponsor DNA kits for other people.

Therein lies the problem. The sponsors have problems finding long lost relatives to test and many people who would like to be tested have problem affording the test. Also many times people do not know their ancestors and hence don’t know whether they would qualify for free DNA testing.

To help solve that problem of matching sponsors with possible testers I came up with a possible solution.

If you are wanting free DNA testing send me an email and what you know of your Courtney lineage, hopefully back at least to your grandparents and greatgrandparents. This information will be kept strictly confidential and when two people match I will contact you. If you and the sponsor agree to the testing the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project will send you a free kit.

You must have Courtney ancestors and have some genealogy so that we can connect you with the sponsors.

I already have quite a few sponsors and several testers in the system.

Just send any questions or submit your information to:

That Ultimate Christmas Gift

Every year people try to come up with that perfect present for their loved ones at Christmas. How about DNA testing to help with family genealogy?

Many have heard about using DNA  in genealogy. Researchers combine their love of working on their family trees with this new science to help break through those “brick walls”. Many use YDNA also to confirm their lineages.

What do you get when you order a YDA test?  FamilytreeDNA will send you a kit that includes two small tubes and a couple of swabs.  Each swab is brushed against the inside of each cheek for 30 seconds. The swabs are placed into the tubes and mailed back to Houston.  The sample are processed and the company emails you when the test results are complete.

Along with the test most also join the family surname projects, in our case the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project.  Members ( getting close to 50 ) results are displayed and easily compared to other males within the project. If you have matches you also have the ability to email those privately and compare genealogies.  Also, if you join the project I offer 40 hours of free genealogy research.

Many people start with the 12 marker STR test and eventually move up to the 67 marker test, commonly referred to as the “gold standard” for  genetic testing. There are discounts when ordered through the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project.

DNA Results for – Frances Courtney b 1766 Suffolk County, New York

Y-DNA results have come in for a male descendant ( kit #339305) of Frances Courtney (1766-1797) of Hamilton County, New York. The kit has been placed in Group 15 of the Courtenay / Courtney DNA Project.

Frances Courtney is in the R1b-M269 haplogroup, the dominant paternal lineage of Western Europe. DNA shows that the family was probably from County Kerry, Ireland. Frances matches a Courtney (O’Cournane), kit#339302, who I obtained a DNA sample from this spring (April 2014) when I was visiting in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland.

DNA testing shows most Courtneys living in the United States of Irish ancestry are from County Kerry.

The family of O’Cournane ( Ó Curnáin ) has generally become anglicised as Courtney.

Bourbon Kings of France and Emperours of Constantinople

Currently we have one Courtenay of a French ancestor testing Y-DNA with the Project.

Elizabeth de Courtenay, daughter of Reginald de Courtenay (who went to England in 1152) married to Peter, son of Louis VI of France and took the surname de Courtenay. Their son became the Latin Emperor Peter II of Courtenay. This line of Courtenays in France included several additional Emperors of Constantinople and continued as French nobles up through at least the early 1700’s.

The haplogroup for this group is R1b – Z381
